ADVENTURE: Beer guzzling and cheese devouring.
WEEK OF: August 25th-31st.
WHERE: Green Bay, Wisconsin.
These are two things that I’m pretty sure I could never, ever live without.
Seriously, if I didn’t have such a deep fear of developing thunder thighs, these are the only two food groups I would ever eat.
I spent this entire week working in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and guess what people in Wisconsin love?
BEER and CHEESE.
Not only do they love these things, but they have perfected the creation and combination of the two.
This week I visited a handful of local breweries, including Titletown and Hinterland Breweries, and inhaled countless other local brews over something called Beer Cheese soup (how the hell have I not heard of this before?!?) at Stadium View bar, near Lambeau Field. All the Wisconsin beer I tasted was incredibly delicious and unique. You can sense the love that goes into making and drinking my favorite beverage here in this state.
But the love isn’t limited to the beer – these people can make and cook the hell out of some cheese too. I’ve never eaten so many delicious, fatty, artery-lining delicacies than I have here in Green Bay. Cheese curds? Yes please! I’ll try them at every place we dine, just to make sure I’ve tried as many variations as possible of the local favorite. Beer Cheese Burgers? Sure, why not. And the best cheesy goodness ever to seduce my taste buds? Bacon Cheese Heads, served at Curly’s Pub at Lambeau Field. We’re talking breaded triangles of deep fried Wisconsin cheese, wrapped in bacon and dipped in barbecue sauce. If those weren’t cheese heaven on earth, I don’t know what is.
Yes, this week has been a delicious one. Well done, Wisconsin. Your people, your cheese and your beer have won me over. You’re my favorite Midwest state, or whatever we call this part of the country. It’s the Midwest, right? Whatever, its between the coasts and isn’t Texas, so to me that means it’s the Midwest.
Coincidentally, I discovered there is only one thing that the people of Wisconsin love more than beer and cheese, and that is the Green Bay Packers. It’s understandable – Packers games are the biggest, the most exciting, and pretty much the ONLY thing going on in this town, and it seems like the people here worship the green and gold like it’s their job.
I don’t mind, just keep the beer and cheese coming.
And maaaaybe I’ll not mention I’m a Cowboys fan.
